The purpose of this blog post is to provide the guidance and the steps needed to update the DSM (DiskStation Manager) on my Synology DS723+. DSM is the operating system that powers every Synology NAS. It’s use cases includes Multimedia, File Management, Productivity, Data Protection, Virtualization, Surveillance, and much more!
In order to determine which DSM version you’re currently running and what version is available for download, please log into your Synology NAS, select Control Panel, followed by Update & Restore. As you can see from the image below, I’m currently on v7.1.1-42962 Update 4 (released last February) and Update 5 (released on April 4th, 2023) for this version is now available for download. You’ll also receive a notification defined as a System Event on the Synology Update & Restore shortcut in the Control Panel to inform you of the available update.
To proceed with the update, select Download. You’ll then be notified the Update is ready to be installed under Notifications. To proceed, select Update Now.
When prompted, select Yes to proceed with the installation. Do NOT power off your NAS during the installation process.
Typically, the updates will not take as much time as indicated. When the update is complete, the Synology Login screen appears. Next, you can confirm the successful installation of the update under Notifications or in the Synology Control Panel.
This concludes this blog post. If I have missed anything or if you have any suggestions, please let me know.
