Enabling 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication) for my Synology DS723

The purpose of this blog post is to provide the guidance and the steps needed to update the DSM (DiskStation Manager) on my Synology DS723. DSM is the operating system that powers every Synology NAS.

Please keep in mind, I was prompted to enable the 2FA feature after updating my DS920 to the latest Synology OS (v 7.2-64570 Update 1).

After you select Enable Now from the options found above, you’ll be presented with the following:

Security Options

If you select Single-Factor Authentication, you’ll receive the pop-up on the left side. If you select 2-Factor Authentication, you’ll receive the pop-up on the right side. For more information about these methods, Synology has provided a detailed explanation and it can be found here. I decided to use Verification code (OTP) from the options provided on the 2-Factor Authentication pop-up:

I selected Verification code (OTP) and was immediately prompted to provide my current password to continue with the configuration:

I decided not to download and configure the Secure Sign-In app for my mobile device because I’m already using a 3rd party authentication app:

I launched my 3rd party authentication app, selected Add Account, and then scanned the QR code to add it to the mobile app. Next, I included a email address to serve as a back in the event I lose my mobile device:

My second sign-in aka 2FA has been enabled and my backup email address has been successfully registered:

Select Apply to complete the configuration:

Confirm Settings

To confirm 2FA was setup properly, I logged out of my NAS and then attempted to sign in. I was prompted for my 3rd party authentication app code:
